An 8.9 magnitude earthquake rocked the north-eastern side of Japan, triggering a tsunami that sent massive waves along the coastal areas of the country. This prompted at least 19 countries in the Pacific area, including the Philippines, to issue Tsunami alerts.
In the Philippines, alert level 2 has been raised in 19 provinces that may be hit by one-meter waves. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology and the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) identified 19 provinces that may be affected by the Tsunami. These are:
- Batanes Group of Islands
- Cagayan
- Ilocos Norte
- Isabela
- Quezon
- Aurora
- Camarines Norte
- Camarines Sur
- Albay
- Catanduanes
- Sorsogon
- Northern Samar
- Eastern Samar
- Leyte
- Southern Leyte
- Surigao del Norte
- Surigao del Sur
- Davao Oriental
- Davao del Sur
Aside from the Philippines and Japan, the U.S. National Weather Service has listed Russia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Australia, Fiji, Mexico, New Zealand, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, Honduras, Chile, Ecuador, Colombia, Peru and the United States as the countries that may get affected by the Tsunami.
