If you start seeing your male co-workers frequently bringing their iPads in toilet cubicles, there are only two explanations – they are either too attached to the device to leave it or they have already subscribed to Playboy Magazine’s app for the iPad. Tweeted by @hughheffner last January, Playboy recently announced the availability of the magazine for iPad users. If you are wondering how Playboy managed to bypass Apple’s strict App Store rules, this is because the magazine is a web app and not a native application, which means it does not need to go through Apple’s app approval process nor does it need to share the profits with Apple.
Doing the web app route is a good way to solve the divide between digital devices but the only downside here is that your device needs to be connected to the web for you to read the magazine. Your internet connection also needs to be fast to make sure the images load immediately, otherwise, the magazine will feel like a strip tease.
If you are interested, Playboy for iPad is available at http://i.playboy.com/ for $8 per month, $60 per year or $100 for a two year subscription.
